Oldham Carnival

What a great success the Oldham Carnival was this year, after a break of 6 years. The Carnival Committee should be very proud of the work that they put into this weekend, their expertise and attention to detail was evident in the crowds that attended the event. I, for one, was very pleased to have been part of this excellent weekend. We would like to wish the Carnival Committee good luck for future events.

We at the West Pennine Group of Advanced Motorists carried on the IAM’s theme of “50 Years of the IAM”, and joined in the Carnival Parade on Saturday with two of Lorraine Brown’s (secretary) VW Beetles, one new Beetle and one 50 year old Beetle. These were displayed on the back of an articulated lorry driven by IAM member, Derrick Tyson. The tractor unit was loaned to us by H & A Haulage Ltd and the trailer was loaned to us by Lansdowne Trading Services. We thank both of these companies for their generosity.

Lorraine, Derrick, Janet Boardman and Dave Murphy expertly decorated the float. A great big thank you to you all for giving up your spare time on that Saturday and for your continued support for the group.

We also had a display stand for the two-day event at the Alexandra Park. The Saturday was particularly busy for us with lots of interest shown, perhaps it was the West Pennine Teddy Bear that we were raffling that attracted the crowds or may be the Advanced Driving Course that we were giving away to the winner of our competition or even it just might have been the fantastic weather that brought people out. Perhaps it was all of these that lead to the superb day that it was.

Sunday was the Music Festival, although not as busy as the Saturday it was well worth the effort as we had, in our opinion, the best spot in the Park, right opposite the stage and screen. Although we were all there to “work” we also had a great time.

I would like to give a special Thank You, to Sue Collin and Colin Batchelor for sticking it out for the two days, now there’s commitment for you, and to Jo Jordon for doing a sterling job in recruiting volunteers for the event. Which now brings me to thank all those volunteers who helped on both days, because without your help, not only for this event, but also for every event that you attend, we just would not be able to promote our group in the same way.

Noel Davies, Vice Chairman WPG
